Theme

I think the theme of my book club book, Distant Waves, was that it is okay to be different. I think this because in the beginning Jane feels like an outcast because her family lives in Spirit Vale and that her mom is a medium. Once she becomes more independent and grown up she realizes that she is different and she accepts it perfectly fine. When she is in New York with Mimi she is practically alone because Mimi has to work at her new job. That leaves Jane alone, but she ends up meeting Thad. He shows her how great she is and she realizes that it's okay for her to be different because Thad likes her that way. Also, Mimi thinks she is so different than the rest of her family because she is half African American and the rest of her family is Caucasian. She also realized that's it's okay to be different when she met a man, Victor. He made her realize that her differences were a good thing. Jane and Mimi realizing that their differences are good shows that the story teaches you that it's okay to be different.

Book Clubs

In the book Distant Waves my favorite character is Mimi. I would like to meet her because she is the oldest of all of the Taylor sisters, therefor I believe she is the wisest and knows the most about her mother and her practices. I also like her the most because I agree with her thinking that her mother is a fraud and can't speak to the dead. She saw her mother writing underneath the table and telling her client's that it was the dead person that she contacted. I also think she is the most outgoing out of all the sisters. She ran off with Jane to New York and got a job as a French women's assistant. Once she got that job she agreed to travel Europe with Ninette, who she was working for. I think that also makes her adventurous because traveling lets you explore many new cultures and places. Next, I think she is brave because she lives without her family for a long time. She lives with just Ninette until finally reuniting with her family on the Titanic. Lastly, to prove she is adventurous again she goes on the Titanic and then later on announces to the family that she will have her wedding on board the ship. This is why I would like to meet Mimi out of all the characters in my book.

Characters

My favorite character in my book is Sutton because at the beginning of the book she is very bitter and self-centered, but then at the end she started to be more nice. When she first met Emma she just wanted to use her to her own advantages and didn't care about Emma's feelings at all. She told Emma that she was using her to try to find her birth mother. Also, she just wanted Emma to be her back-up in case she needed to not be home or where people would see her when she needed to be. It let her go off and do whatever she wanted whenever she wanted while Emma just pretended to be her and take on the roll of Sutton Mercer. At the end of the book Sutton realizes that Emma is her sister and them looking for their birth mother brings them closer. She treats Emma with respect now and actually goes to her for help instead of just going to her when she wants Emma to take her place so she can go off and do her own thing. She and Emma start to become true friends and Sutton relies on Emma instead of using her now.

First Blog Post

My favorite books are the Pretty Little Liars series. I love these books because they are very descriptive and the subject matter is something I enjoy a lot. They are very intriguing mystery books that are about a group of friends who’s, “clique leader” got killed and now they are being tortured because of it.
The genre of books that I like to read the most is mystery, but I also like realistic fiction and fantasy.
The book that I just finished is Glamour by Penelope Fletcher. The setting is in the supernatural world, but it is in the present day. I know that because they face demons and all sorts of supernatural creatures, but they don’t have any advanced technology or anything that could be in the future. This book is about a girl named Rae who is destined to be a vampire, but falls into a life in the demon’s world. There she has to protect the amulet from the demons. In the process she must battle a number of creatures that are trying to steal the amulet and ruin the supernatural world.  She is not actually a vampire yet though so she could choose to be a normal human and die like a normal human would or she could become a vampire and live forever. If she lived as a vampire she would have to battle all the other creature/supernatural beings for the rest of her life while trying to protect the amulet. She must be bitten to actually become a vampire, but she was born as a human so she has the choice to stay human or become a vampire. Her becoming a vampire would help the other vampires so much because she can protect the amulet so well from the demons and other creatures. The self-conflict is that she has become very close to a demon that she will end up having to fight off as she guards the amulet.
